Understanding Acne
Acne is a disease that involves the hair follicle
and sebaceous gland complex (known as the pilosebacious
follicles) of the face, neck, shoulders, back and upper
chest -- the so-called flush areas of the skin. This happens in
one of two ways:
»» The
pore through which the hairs emerge from the skin - here dead skin
cells become more "sticky" and partially block the pore.
»» The
oil or sebaceous gland - more oil is produced, which gives rise
to a generally oily complexion. The gland is located near the root
of the hair follicle.
The disease seems to be aggravated by emotional
stress, winter weather, some stimulant drugs, and the premenstrual
period. There is no positive evidence that any specific foods are
factors, except perhaps with individual youngsters.
There are two basic types of Acne; non-inflammatory
acne and inflammatory acne.
Non-Inflammatory Acne
Noninflamed lesions called comedomes, consist of two types of
acne:
- Closed Comedones, or whiteheads,
with no visible opening.
- Open Comedones, or black
heads with visible, dilated openings that are discolored
as exposed fatty acids are discolored by air.

Inflammatory Acne
Inflamed lesions result when the follicular wall ruptures to produce
up to four types of acne:
- Papules: the mildest form of
inflammatory acne this lesion appears as a small and firm lump
in the skin. This is often quite tender but unless there are
many, rarely obviously visible.
- Pustule: like papules, pustules
are small and round, however, pus is visible.
- Nodule: otherwise known as cystic
lesions, this is the most serious form of acne and is the result
of comedone pollutants spilling into surrounding tissue. The
body reacts to this by producing pus to halt the spread of infection.
This type of acne may cause scarring if left untreated. Medical
treatment is advised.
